Petra Garcia Lopez Obituary

December 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

fbee_120362_12302008_12_31_20081Petra Garcia Lopez was born on May 30, 1919, in Taft, Texas. Our loving mother passed away on Saturday, December 27, 2008. Thank you Lord for the 89 years. We have been blessed to have had her as our mother and mentor. What a beautiful legacy our parents leave behind “Love of Family” with ten children, 33 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren. Our mother devoted all her time and energy to taking care of all of us (her babies). She would often remind us of the most important responsibility of a parent “to love and take care of our children!” Every time a baby was born, she would smile and we could see a twinkle in her eyes. I’m sure she had that same smile and twinkle in her eyes on Christmas Day! Mom, we love you and we’ll miss you. Thank you for loving us and taking care of us. Your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Pedro Lopez; two sons, Ricardo “Ricky” and Alejandro “Alex”; two grandchildren, Frank and Linda Herrera; and brother, Santos Garcia, Jr. She is survived by five daughters, Olivia, Angelita, Gloria, Consuelo, and Maria; three sons, Alberto, Pedro Jr. and Rudy; sisters, Lupe, Maria, Carmel, and Cecilia; brothers, Julian and Vincente; and numerous family members in Texas. Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Friday, January 2, 2009, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Saturday, January 3, 2009, at 10:00 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. WHITEHURST, SULLIVAN, BURNS & BLAIR Funeral Home 1525 East Saginaw Way Fresno, Ca. (559)227-4048.

My first gay wedding

December 30, 2008 · 1 Comment

my-first-gay-weddingAs this year comes to a close, I am reflecting on some of the major moments for me in 2008.  Without a doubt, my first official GAY WEDDING ranks up there as one of the most memorable events for me the entire year.  My friends John and Tony, who I have had the pleasure of getting to know better this year, invited me to be a part of their special day.  With the state Supreme Court ruling that not allowing gays and lesbians the right to marry was in fact discriminatory, many across the state started getting hitched.  Although Proposition 8 did pass last month, I firmly expect to see it overturned early in 2009, making the whole damn law (and it’s demise) just another chapter in the fight for gay rights.  John and Tony said their vows in front of friends and family at their home and hosted a great reception afterwards.  Seeing them standing in front of everyone declaring their love and showing their commitment to one another before God, family, and friends stirred my heart.  We are people too damn it!  We deserve the right to love and to build a home and a life with the person we love too.  The added traditional Mexican theme for the day (and the awesome dancers) added to a memory for me that will always be, “My First Gay Wedding!”  Thank you John and Tony for letting me be a part of your special day!  :-)

National Do Not Call Registry

December 29, 2008 · 2 Comments

Did you know you can get on a list that telemarketers can’t call?  If you’ve been on the list for 31 days and they continue to call you can file a complaint on them!  You can register up to 3 phone numbers and include your cell phone!  Here is some information I copied and paste from the Do Not Call Registry website:

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
THE NATIONAL DO NOT CALL REGISTRY

The National Do Not Call Registry gives you a choice about whether to receive telemarketing calls at home. Most telemarketers should not call your number once it has been on the registry for 31 days. If they do, you can file a complaint at this Website. You can register your home or mobile phone for free.

What’s even better about the service since now is that once you register, you don’t have to renew like in times past.  Once you have registered, your listing is permanent!  You can check out the Do Not Call Registry at:

The new gay.com: Adam 4 Adam

December 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Ever since gay.com “redesigned” their site a couple of months ago, I think they wound up just dropping the ball…majorly. The new site is slow, bogs down constantly, and just doesn’t work very well. One site’s disaster and bad planning, is another site’s gain I guess. Enter Adam 4 Adam! The new social networking site is becoming all the rage here in California. Although it’s still majorly cruisy, the interface is smooth, easy to load, and best of all, everything is free! You can post and view pics, send emails, and search all up and down the state. I’ve met more cool, normal guys on there than I have on gay.com in a long, long time. The ads are pretty graphic so you might not want to view it at work but the services you get for free are worth the trade off for the explicit ads I think.  You can check it out at:

Petra Lopez R.I.P.

December 27, 2008 · 2 Comments

grandma_blogMy grandma died today. Petrina Lopez, my mom’s mom, passed away peaceably in her sleep this morning. Grandma Lopez was 89 years old and had suffered several serious strokes, falls, kidney failures, and very harsh bouts with chronic high blood pressure over the last 10 years. I can’t tell you how many times the doctors told the family that she wouldn’t make it throught the night. Each time, Grandma would battle back, do some rehab, and then regain 80% of her mobility and just befuddle the medical staff. She was a fighter. In fact, Grandma Lopez was the strongest woman I’ve ever known and I’m honored to have had her in my life as long I have. My Grandma taught me time and time again that no matter how bad things may get, or how dire the circumstances, you never, ever give up. You have fought the good fight Grandma, say hi to Grandpa for me, and rest in peace. You deserve it.

Happy Holidays

December 25, 2008 · 2 Comments

As we gather with friends and family today to eat and open gifts, or whatever it is that you do with loved ones on this day, let’s be mindful of the people and things that really matter in life.  Let’s also be mindful of the people and things that don’t really matter.  The new year is just around the corner and that means it’s time to start reflecting on 2008 and gearing up for some new goals, new attitudes, and some new ways of doing things maybe.  Happy Holidays everyone!  Drink some eggnog for me.  :-)

Dallas woes continue

December 24, 2008 · Leave a Comment

172226Embarrassed.  That’s the only word I can think of.  Three interceptions, a sputtering offense, and a defense that gives up two touchdown runs from the line of scrimmage in the last 5 minutes of the game?  I was embarrassed by the Cowboys on Saturday night, it’s just that plain and simple.  We have some big problems, let’s face it.  The offense, although packed with talent, doesn’t strike fear in any ones heart.  We have a superb talent in Terrell Owens but we can’t seem to get him the ball enough, and ultimately, a lack of focus and discipline at key points in the game make us a big lion…with no teeth.  Not only are our playoff hopes in serious jeopardy now, I don’t even know if we deserve to be in the playoffs.  I mean the extra game as a Wild Card would be fun and all, but I don’t see the team I saw against the Ravens going anywhere in the post season.  :-(

A gay joke…

December 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So there are four gay guys sitting in a jacuzzi.  All of a sudden, a condom floats to the top of the water and one of the gay guys says to the other three, “Ok, who farted???”

LOL!  :-)

Gift card pride

December 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I am not ashamed to admit it.  In fact, I’m quite PROUD of it.  I’m a gift card giver!  Birthdays, anniversaries, even the holidays.  I don’t care what etiquette-know-it-all says to the contrary.  They’re dumb.  Gift cards make GREAT gifts!  My holiday shopping this year consisted mostly of these little, magical gifts.  They’re smart for so many reasons.  You can set the amount, which really helps your budget planning, you don’t have to guess what you think someone may like, or not like, and it saves everyone the hassle of having to return the gift in case it doesn’t fit or if it’s the wrong color.  In the end, the person receiving the gift card can pick out what they want, and that’s a premium benefit for me, it really is.  After all, the gift is about THEM, not me.  What’s more, if someone wants to go in on something that was out of my price range, they can pitch in a little bit of their own money, or another gift card from someone else, and totally get something they really, really wanted and might not have been able to afford otherwise.  So, if you have some folks on your holiday shopping list this year that you’re still scratching your head trying to figure out what you’re going to get them, get smart and just get them a gift card and be done with it already!  :-)
