This is my mom.  Today is her birthday and I thought it’d be a great way to honor her by dedicating today’s post to her.  Many of my friends have met her, many have not.  She’s a great woman and the best mother any son could ask for.  I didn’t get a lot of support growing up from my father but in the end, it didn’t matter because my mom was able to love me enough for the both of them.  Our relationship has evolved and changed over time but she remains the most important woman in my life and she’s one of my best friends.  She has always supported me in any of my decisions, even when I was a teenager, even when she didn’t agree with what I wanted for life.  She’s strong, a hard worker, a still very supportive of everything I want to do.  It pained my heart years ago to tell her I was gay.  I think it’s toughest for a son to tell his mom that the image she’s had in her head all those years wasn’t true.  She cried and it hurt me to hurt her.  It took some time but we got over that hurdle.  She was very welcoming of the two boyfriends she’s known me to be with and her “gaydar” has grown impressively accurate over the last year or two.  She can even tell me who’s the top and who’s the bottom in random couples at Target.  It’s so awesome!  How many gay boys can have THAT conversation with their mothers?  I get to have dinner with my mom today for her birthday and I’m so looking forward to it.  She was my rock growing up and she’s one of my best friends even today.  I love her so very much.  Oh and for those of you who haven’t guessed:  I get my youthful looking (and acting) genes from her!
