So I’ve been thinking to myself what should be my very last post for 2009. As I thought over some of the highlights and major developments of the year I realized one development in my personal life very much over shadows everything else. 2009 is the year I started officially dating David Bishop. It had been 6 years since my last boyfriend and without going into a lot of ancient history, suffice it to say that I wondered if I’d ever be able to be in love again. David has changed all of that. David is by far one of the smartest, most genuine, sweetest souls I’ve ever met and had the privilege of knowing. I love him very much and I want to go on the record by saying he was the hightlight of 2009 for me.

How do you eat a 2,000 pound elephant?

This is a question we used to ask in a leadership development course I taught for FedEx a while back. How do you eat a 2,000 pound elephant? The answer is: one bite at a time. Leadership takes patience. Rome wansn’t build in a day. This is so very true. Anything worth doing takes both time and patience. The challenges and problems that leaders face, either in business or church work or other organizaitonal settings can often be complex and fused together with other issues and concerns. You have to tackle them one step at a time. One day at a time if you will. You need a plan, strategy, and you need to do the work hard of taking just one bite at a time.

Ok. So if you haven’t guessed it by now, I’m a little bit of a word whore. I love words. I love new words, old words, definitions and etymologies. I especially love digging in to Greek and Hebrew. Anyway, here is another cool word that happens to be one of my favorites…

Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control, every 9 1/2 minutes one person in the U.S. is infected with HIV? That’s a simply staggering statistic in my opinion. I read that, and a ton of other useful information, on the Gay Men’s Health Crisis website. The GMHC is a pioneering organization dedicated to the fight against AIDS and HIV. This is my Mom’s tree this year. I’ve always loved my Mom’s trees over the holidays. No matter what was going in our family, good or bad, or how tough we had it, we always had a tree and we always had good energy Christmas morning. My Mom always made sure of this year after year. I hope everyone out there is enjoying family, friends, and good energy today.

So I have a confession: I never met a pizza I didn’t like. Well, that’s not true, but for the most part, pizza is one of my most favorite things on earth. Lately, David and I have been searching out quick, easy, and cheap meals during the week that don’t require us to do dishes or cook. We passed by a Domino’s a month or so ago and we decided to pick up one of their medium pepperoni’s for only $3.99; it was late and we figured at $4 if it sucked it was no big loss. I was super impressed and we’ve probably been back at least three more times in as many weeks. The crust is thick and doughy, there’s plenty of cheese and pepperoni, and they have this garlic/butter/seasoned salt thing going on around the crust that sure is yummy. You can upgrade to a large for only a dollar more and in this economy, dinner for two for less than $6 is an awesome thing. Especially if you have a couple slices left over the next day for lunch at work.

Amazing. Outstanding. Well done. These are just a few of the words and phrases that I think of after taking in the phenomenal Avatar over the weekend. I really, really liked this movie! The story is well written, the acting is solid, and the special effects are simply to die for. The battle scenes are well choreographed and rich with action and authenticity. To be honest, I haven’t seen this level of epic since Attack of the Clones or the third installment of Lord of the Rings. I really wasn’t looking forward to this movie at all, it was David’s pick, but wow I’m glad I saw it. If you need a break or want something fun to do over your holiday vacation take in Avatar. It’s well worth it and a great way to spend an afternoon or evening.
