So I’ve always been a sucker for blonde haired, blue eyed boys. Throw in a swimmer’s build and white skin and I’m just in heaven. I can go into more detail about that later though in another blog. The Blonde I’m talking about today is Starbucks new blonde roast coffee. It’s mellow, lighter, and not as pungent as some of their other darker blends and I really like it. If you’re a fan of softer roasts you might want to give it a try.

The legacy of Joe Paterno should be preserved and protected

I can’t tell you how sad I was to learn that former Penn State coach and cultural icon Joe Paterno passed away this weekend. Joe Paterno was a giant of a man, a coaching legend, and a passionate leader that deserves our respect and gratitude. His accomplishments at Penn State and in the his local community are unparalleled and he will continue to have an impact on college athletics for years to come. I believe wholeheartedly that his legacy should be preserved and protected and his memory cherished for his body of work and sacrifice.

Personally I refuse to be a part of a culture and society that will crucify a man or his character for the sake of sensationalism and selling newspapers or magazines. I once knew a very wise man who said, “Never judge an Indian until you walk a mile in his moccasins.” I’ve coached high school athletics before and I can’t say I would have done anything different than Joe Paterno if I found myself in the same situation. I belive Joe Paterno deserve and has more than earned the benefit of the doubt from his fans, supporters, and even his critics.

If another coach came to me with allegations of sexual misconduct involving some one on my staff, friend or not, I would have reported the allegations to my athletic director for follow up. It’s not my place to pursue or oversee what human resources does from that point on. Today in California I would have to also report the allegations to the authorities but that wasn’t always so, even here in California. It wasn’t Paterno’s legal obligation to do so either. That’s why there were no legal charges brought against him. That might not settle with some people but their problem has to be with the law, not those who follow it, even if we don’t agree with them.

From an HR perspective I couldn’t inquire or follow up with the school to see what came of my report. I can’t ask any of the parties involved and I can’t know what, if any, action was taken against those involved. In retrospect Joe Paterno went on record saying he wished he would have done more but hindsight is ALWAYS 20/20. Joe Paterno was a coaching legend, a charitable and generous man, and a leader who embodied and exemplified a level of passion and dedication that you just don’t see very much of today. I won’t asterisk or tarnish his career or accomplishments in any way because I have the luxury of knowing what I do now. It’s not right and it’s simply not fair to Joe Paterno.

I will only say thank you and rest in peace. You will be missed and remembered by so many.
